Larry Evens had a hernia when he arrived at the Mission. The injury prevented him from working, and by the end of the day, he was often doubled over in pain. Dr. Seely, one of the Mission’s volunteer doctors, examined Larry and arranged for him to see a surgeon who agreed to repair the hernia free of charge. Mission staff also assisted Larry with the paperwork to apply for Project ACCESS, a network of hospitals and doctors serving the poor, so that Larry has no bills from the surgery that required an overnight stay at Sacred Heart. “This is life changing for me because I’m able-bodied and ready to get back to work.”
