Words to Direct Our Paths

There's something about a new notebook, a blank calendar, a freshly tilled plot of soil that beckons us. It's a fresh start, an opportunity to create, to fill in the blanks and forget past mistakes. A new year is like that for many of us. We see it as an opportunity to plunge forward with new resolve. We asked staff and residents to share words or verses they had chosen to guide their paths in the year ahead, and several of them obliged. On the surface, Mike, Debra, Justin and Samantha have seemingly nothing in common.

Justin was born in Chicago with alcohol and meth in his system. His parents were addicts.

Mike was born in rural Idaho. His father was a logger whom Mike adored.

Samantha barely knew her dad. He wasn't a nice guy and had very limited involvement in her life.

Debra's family life was so dysfunctional she never really learned how to relate to other people.

Dyann escaped domestic violence but had nowhere to go

Dyann was married to a man who abused her for five years. He hit her. He pushed her down stairs. At one point, she ended up in the emergency room with 26 staples in her head. From there, the police took her to a safe house, but after her stay ended, she wasn’t sure what to do.
