Gospel-Centered from the Start

“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He Who promised is faithful…Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Hebrews 10:23, 13:8)

Board-2

Seventy-five years ago, people in our city were already standing in line for food. The founders of our ministry recognized that unless a heart is changed by the power of the Gospel, no amount of effort could truly change a person’s life. That’s why we have always kept the Gospel front and center. It is Christ who transforms lives.

Culture has shifted, and the reasons for addiction and homelessness have changed. Once, men were the primary focus of rescue and recovery; today, women and children are equally in need. But one truth remains: when you touch the heart of a person, there is hope and life change.

The significance of seventy-five years is no small thing. We were among the first in Spokane to address homelessness, the first to open a women’s shelter, and we remain one of the longest-serving nonprofits in the city. We’ve never waited on government solutions, nor accepted government funding. Instead, we’ve trusted God’s provision through individuals like you, and what a testament it has been to His goodness and faithfulness!

Looking back, we honor those who sacrificed and labored to begin this ministry, investing in a vision far bigger than themselves. They pinched pennies to keep buildings warm, never imagining the multiple locations and enterprises we steward today. Miracle after miracle has marked this journey, and it has always been God’s hand at work.

Why do people give to this ministry when they don’t benefit directly? It’s because God moves in their hearts. Some even leave their legacy with us after they’re gone. That generosity is beyond comprehension, and it reflects God’s passion for the people we serve.

Through all the years, the Gospel has remained our foundation. Unlike so many institutions that began with biblical roots but drifted away, UGM has never wavered. God blesses consistency, obedience, and putting Him first. That’s why we remain debt-free, free from government funding, and free to do what He has called us to do.

As we celebrate 75 years, we remember that one thing never changes: God, His Word, and His heart for the poor. This ministry is not about us; It is about Him. Those who join in are stepping into what God ordained long ago, staying true to His vision and plan.

Thank you for all the ways you participate in this journey, and to God be the glory!

Serving Together,
