Taking the Step of Obedience

In the 1980s, I was part of Campus Crusade, a ministry working with students—future leaders—on a college campus, believing they'd make an impact on the world. That was important to me. So, when my dad asked me to work at the mission, I had to admit, it was the furthest thing from my mind.

“People may make plans in their minds, but the Lord decides what they will do.”

(Proverbs 16:9)

But God has a way of using Scripture and challenging you, and sometimes that challenge is not easy. It requires a step of obedience. And when you step through the right door and take the right road, it’s remarkable what God does and how He reveals Himself. He totally transforms your thinking and your heart and gives you a love and passion for what you do that you never thought you would have.

At that point, God spoke to me through the passage of the Samaritan woman. She had no name, she was an outcast, but Jesus went to her and met her in the middle of the day. This story opened my eyes to God's heart for people without a name—those despised and rejected by others. It showed me that is where His heart truly was, that He had to go to her.

For many of us, we reach points in our lives where we face crossroads. It’s hard to change your thinking when you are set and you’ve decided. What would the last forty years of my life look like if I had chosen another road? I am glad I was obedient to do what God showed me to do. I can’t comprehend all the blessings I would have missed out on, having seen God do so many miracles over all these years.

I don’t know who is reading this, but maybe God is directing you down a different road. Listen. Obey. There is no better way, and you will miss out on so much if you don’t heed His calling.
