Recovery: "Press into the work"

Do Not Fall Victim to Your Fears

By Brent Watts, UGM Recovery Graduate

Brent Watts talks to UGM recovery participantsBrent Watts, above, recently completed the first 4 phases of UGM's Recovery program. Toward the end of his speech, he spoke these words to his friends still working their way through the program.

I urge you, brothers, do not fall victim to your fears. You have not done anything that cannot be forgiven. Do not let fear, shame, or worse yet, pride, hold you back from becoming the men God wants you to be – authentic, courageous, godly men.brent-thumb

2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God did not give us the spirit of timidity, but the spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.”

Press into the work you know you need to do. Go to the places inside of yourself you don’t want to go. It will be painful. It will be uncomfortable, and it will be hard. It will also be worth it. Do not become complacent. Don’t say to yourself, “That’s good enough.” Challenge yourselves. Don’t forget your priorities. Do not forget where you came from; you don’t want to go back there.

Grieve for the past and rejoice for the future. You will never have a chance like this again. This program and these people are unique. God has placed you here for a reason. Don’t squander this opportunity and don’t waste their time or yours. Remember, the ability to accept responsibility is the measure of a man. You and you alone are responsible for your recovery.

God has given each and every one of us a great gift. He has given us the gift of life. Choose not to waste that precious gift.

~Brent Watts

UPDATE June 19, 2014: Brent graduated from the LIFE Recovery program, has moved into his own place and works for Rockwood Retirement Communities.
