Volunteers Providing Welcome
UGM’s volunteer case managers stand on the frontlines of ministry, offering listening ears and wise counsel to men and women in crisis.
For the second year in a row, the Safeco Foundation has awarded the Union Gospel Mission with $10,000 to help fund its outreach to people still living on the streets of Spokane. An average of 95 people are served each week. They come out of the elements, sit down at tables to eat and, in addition to a hearty meal, receive blankets, socks, warm clothes and hygiene items. Volunteers come to serve, play music, give haircuts and provide foot care.
Cheryl Hanes, 45, has been homeless for two years, camping out downtown. She is a regular at Friday Night Outreach: “If you need to talk, there’s someone you can talk to. You know there’s gonna be a meal; you’re gonna have plenty in your stomach. It’s cool in the summer, warm in the winter, and there’s clean socks.”
