We are so excited about our new shelter in Lewiston, Idaho! As we prepare to serve the LC Valley area, we understand that the community has many questions. We have addressed these frequently asked questions and concerns with the hope of informing our community about our plans and our heart for the area.
Yes. UGM screens both employees and volunteers through an interview, background check, reference checks, and consent to our Statement of Faith. Volunteers are expected to align with the mission and values of the ministry as they serve.
No. UGM built this shelter specifically to serve individuals from the Lewiston, Clarkston, Moscow, and Pullman region. The only reason someone may be transported from our facility to another is if they choose to enroll in our long-term recovery programs—Women’s Recovery in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene and Men’s Recovery in Spokane.
Yes. UGM’s goal is to help people transition out of homelessness and into stable employment. We will actively partner with local businesses and job placement services to support residents who are ready to re-enter the workforce.
UGM offers Aftercare housing to our program graduates in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene. Our rescue facilities collaborate with local housing providers and refer residents to those resources. Our goal is to equip residents for independent living, with housing stability as part of that transition.
Initial funding has provided for our shelter and our first year of operations. Ongoing community support will be essential for long-term sustainability. UGM has a 75-year history of growing support and is completely debt-free. Recovery programs are currently offered in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene.
There are no current plans to reopen a thrift store in the LC Valley. Our focus is on shelter and recovery support at this time.
No. UGM does not allow registered sex offenders at this facility. This policy is in place for the protection of the men, women, and children staying on site.
The buildings next to the housing shelter are a cafeteria (to the south) and a chapel building (to the north).
These concerns are under the jurisdiction of the City of Lewiston. UGM has complied with all required building codes and permitting processes, including those related to traffic and pedestrian safety.
Speed limits and related signage are determined by the City of Lewiston. We encourage residents to direct these questions to city officials.
Public transportation logistics are managed by the local transit authority. UGM is not responsible for establishing bus stops, but we will advocate for accessible options for our residents.
The parking lot will support approximately 47 vehicles. Since some residents do not own cars, the lot is primarily designed for staff, volunteers, and visitors.
Yes. The residential units are furnished to provide a welcoming, dignified living space for residents.
Yes. Visit our LC Valley web page for the most recent updates, and be sure to sign up for our email list so you don't miss a thing!
All required building codes have been followed. Any questions about fire response capabilities should be directed to the Lewiston Fire Department.
Ambulance services are dispatched by the City of Lewiston. Please contact the Fire Department directly for more information.
Community members should ask the City of Lewiston about emergency response planning and capacity.
UGM operates a clean and sober environment. Guests must pass a Urinary Analysis and Breathalyzer to stay. If someone is in danger, local authorities and emergency services will be contacted. Guests must adhere to UGM policies to maintain a safe and sober environment for all.
UGM serves individuals ready to pursue life change. Unfortunately, not everyone is ready for that, and we are not able to provide services in every case. We will work with local faith communities, agencies, and resources to offer referrals when possible. The hope is that they would return ready for the services we offer, while pursuing sobriety and healing. We will not allow individuals who come to receive services to loiter near businesses along Snake River Avenue and will respond to any persons trying to camp in Kiwanis Park in partnership with local authorities.
This is outside of UGM’s control. We do agree that separating addiction from homelessness and offering effective treatment would benefit the entire community. Until then, UGM continues to serve those who voluntarily seek help and transformation.
