Chapel Provider: Rob Lento and His Song

On the first Wednesday of every month, you’ll find Rob Lento singing at the Union Gospel Mission chapel service as part of His Song. The men’s singing ensemble has been singing at the Mission
 since 1999.

“It’s our favorite place to sing,” Rob said.

The group performs a combination of praise and worship songs. “We find that the music we sing has a calming, soothing, healing effect.” The group stops singing part way through to take prayer requests. “The men get very vulnerable with us,” Rob said. After the service, Rob and other members often linger to pray with men individually, and since the group comes to the Mission monthly, they get to hear answers to their prayers, as well. “The presence of the Lord is very evident.”

Rob offered some words of encouragement to other groups who might be interested in doing chapel services at the Mission:

  • “Be yourself. They don’t want to be lectured. They want to know you’re real and you struggle with the same things they do.”
  • “Look past your fears. Walking in for the first time, I had a lot of fears, but don’t be put off by the externals. Look past the rough exterior. Look instead to hearts that are hurting.” It’s real ministry, Rob said, which inevitably impacts you as well as them.
