Volunteers Providing Welcome
UGM’s volunteer case managers stand on the frontlines of ministry, offering listening ears and wise counsel to men and women in crisis.
Marchauna Rodgers and her children – Faylynn, 16; Elli, 12; Makayla, 10, and Caleb, 7 – have been serving lunch at UGM twice a month for over three years. The experience has changed their perceptions about homeless people.
“I used to think they were kind of scary,” said Faylynn. “Now I know they’re just people who need help.”
Caleb said he likes serving people, and Elli agreed: “I get to see a smile on the men’s faces and make them happy.”
Marchauna added, “What you get is a lot more than what you give. The intrinsic reward of knowing that smiling at someone makes a difference in their day – that’s huge. There’s not a lot we can do, but we can do this, and it’s a lot of fun. Plus, if one of my kids was homeless, I’d want somebody to be taking care of them like UGM does.”
