Volunteers Providing Welcome
UGM’s volunteer case managers stand on the frontlines of ministry, offering listening ears and wise counsel to men and women in crisis.
What could possibly be better than an incredible volunteer? How about an incredible volunteer who solicits and trains more volunteers?
Bob Peterson has been working at the UGM Center for Women & Children in Coeur d’Alene in a variety of capacities since it opened– primarily as a photographer and bicycle repairman.
This summer, Bob took 13-year-old Justin under his wing to teach him how to repair bicycles, as well. Each Wednesday, they meet at the Center to see what bicycles have been donated, breaking some down for parts and turning others into reliable transportation.
Justin didn’t know much about bicycle maintenance when he started, Bob said, but “his intuitive feel for the mechanics backed by a strong initiative really helped. Together we turn out safe, working bicycles for the women and children at UGM.”
Justin is working toward the Bronze medal of the Congressional Award; one of the requirements is to have 100 hours of voluntary public service within a 7-month period.
“It’s been a great all-around experience,” Justin said. “I’ve learned a whole bunch about fixing bikes. Plus, it’s just been a blessing to serve the Lord and help these women rebuild their lives.”
